Things you should know about your dog:
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR DOG ISN'T A SHOW DOG?

by Leslie Telford Kettring
  1. When you ask your friends what they think of your dog and they get this look of panic and talk about the weather, he probably isn’t a show dog.
  2. When you ask your friends who are not adept at changing the subject what they think about your dog and they say he has “beautiful eye color and nice feet”, he probably isn’t a show dog.
  3. When you have been showing your dog for four years and haven’t gotten a point, he probably isn’t a show dog.
  4. When the breeder of your dog sends you e-mail promising you her first born if you will stop showing the dog, he probably isn’t a show dog.
  5. If the breeder of your dog rolls her eyes, shrugs her shoulders and tells her friends that the dog was sold as a “pet” and that she will never sell a pet again without a limited registration, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  6. When the judge hands you your ribbon and says “take him home and love him”, your dog probably isn’t a show dog.
  7. When handlers seem to melt into the crowd when you approach them, you probably don’t have a show dog.
  8. When your competition continues to urge you to show your four year old dog, with comments like “he just needs to mature”, “the roach in the top line isn’t that noticeable when he’s set up properly”, “a little road work will bring that rear around”, “a lot of dogs move that way in front” and he has “beautiful eye color and nice feet”, he probably isn’t a show dog.
  9. When you are the first person approached when people are trying to build a major, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  10.  When the competition in your class of two, begins to line up someone to cover his dog for winners before you walk in the ring, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  11. When the breeder judge reaches for her written standard when you walk in the ring, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  12. When spectators regularly come up to you and ask if your dog is a pit bull mix, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  13. When a professional handler who hasn’t been able to escape tells you that his handling skills are not good enough to finish your dog and he has won Best in Show at the Garden, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  14. When the breeder tells you that it is not necessary to write down the sire and dam of your dog in order for the entry to be valid, your dog probably isn’t a show dog.
  15. When the owner of the sire of your dog asks if you would send him a DNA sample because he is sure that his dog could not have produced your dog, your dog is probably not a show dog.
  16. If the owner of the sire of your dog, sends you multiple e-mails promising , the pick of his next litter,
or the title to his motor home, if you will stop showing the dog, your dog is probably not a show dog.
